Day 1 - Stockholm - Sigtuna - Uppsala - Västerås - Eskilstuna
Drive north out of Stockholm to the village of Sigtuna, the first capital of Sweden. At Uppsala visit Gamla Uppsala to see the three burial mounds of pre-Viking kings. Also visit Uppsala cathedral, the largest in all of Scandinavia. Across the river you can see the Linneaus gardens. Continue to Västerås, there is a partially restored Gothic cathedral here which houses the shrine of the King Erik XIV. Drive south to Eskilstuna, where you will overnight at a castle on the shores of Lake Mälaren or in a hotel in the city.
Day 2 - Eskilstuna - Strängnäs - Mariefred - Stockholm
In Eskilstuna visit the artisans’ colony of Tingsgården. Today Eskilstuna is a steel-working town, and the best silverware in Sweden bears the name Eskilstuna. Continue to Strängnäs on the shores of Lake Mälaren, where you will see old wood houses and the large historic cathedral where the reformation was introduced. At Mariefred the main attraction is the castle Gripsholm, which once was a medieval fort, and now houses the Swedish State Portrait Collection. You might want to take an old steam locomotive trip here. Return to Stockholm for overnight. |
