Walking in Unison

February 7, 2018

I once read a story about how the ancient Greeks had once thought that human beings were created with two heads, two hearts, four arms, and four legs. They were genuinely good people, but all of a sudden really upset the gods.

To punish humanity the gods sent a lightning bolt out of the sky and split each person into two- each with one head, one heart, two arms, and two legs.

Then, just for spite, the gods relocated each half to different places on the earth.

This is why we always strive for someone to complete us, we are looking for ourselves.

I have been thinking a bit about my origins, and my ancestors who came before me... mostly from Sweden, some from Scotland. If you dig far enough back, everyone in my line seems to have come from upper Germany. I guess that explains my stubborn temperament.

Something I have discovered is the longing we have for ourselves, for our companions, and to learn about our origins all come from the same place.

It's not so much that we are bound to the ancestors who came before us, and their stubborn mistakes, burdens or blessings. We are responsible to stand up by ourselves. But in standing, in looking into the future as blurry that it might be, and to say "Yes!" is to take all of that which came before, all the things we strive after with us, and we are free to be ourselves.

I say all of this to remind you, you who might be curious about a trip to the places where your ancestors might come from- it is a really cool thing to visit the place where the footsteps of those ancestors took place.

At Anderson Scandinavian Tours we have a deep respect for those who came before us. We know that somehow our steps, whether they are in New York, California, Kansas, or Stockholm, are all somehow in unison with our mothers and our fathers who came before us. They live on in us and we in them.

Let us know if you'd like to schedule a tour of Sweden. We have tour packages available and Dean Anderson is always a wonderful person to chat with about visiting Scandinavia.
